Wrinkles are creases, folds, or ridges in the skin. They normally appear as people get older, but they can also develop after spending a long time in water.Most people do not welcome wrinkles, and billions of dollars are spent globally on treatments to remove or delay them.A wide range of factors contribute to the different kinds of wrinkles that everybody’s skin acquires over the years. Some stem entirely from our own life choices, while others are totally beyond our control. Generally, it’s a blend of the two—we can’t entirely escape the influences that lead wrinkles to form, but we can take significant steps to minimize the threats to our skin.Scientists like to divide up the causes of wrinkles into intrinsic—from within—and extrinsic—from outside. Although as we will see, this is not always a hard and fast distinction.
what causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles are a by-product of aging. With age, skin cells divide more slowly, and the skin’s inner layer, called the dermis, begins to thin. That starts to undo skin’s stretchiness and structure. Aging skin also starts to lose its ability to hold on to moisture, makes less oil, and is slower to heal. That all contributes to the wrinkling process.
Facial Expressions & Sleeping Position
The face is not static. As we live our lives, repeated movements and pressures make their mark. For instance, if you are accustomed to sleeping in the same position every night, try mixing it up a bit—as your skin loses strength and springiness with age, the nightly pressure of your pillow can result in permanent creases.
We create wrinkles during our waking hours, too. Dynamic expression lines, which tend to form around the areas of facial expression at the eyes, forehead and around the mouth. Over the years, using our facial muscles to smile, frown and laugh leaves residual tension that, as our skin loses elasticity, can engrave expression lines onto the face. Without the right glasses or contact lenses, poor eyesight can take its toll, as squinting is known to worsen wrinkles around the eyes.
Photoaging, or changes that occur due to the sun, is by far the biggest culprit in the causation of wrinkles.When UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin’s dermal layer, it causes the breakdowns of our much-needed collagen and elastin. As these essential proteins break down, the skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Wrinkles are just one effect stemming from sun damage; photoaging also causes sun spots, rough texture, pigmentation problems, and can even lead to the development of deadly skin cancer.
Stop smoking! It’s bad for your health and it’s what causes wrinkles on your face. Each time you take a drag from a cigarette, you’re pulling on what’s called your Purse String muscles. This repeated motion has the same effect as expression lines: premature wrinkles which betray your age. Furthermore, the nicotine found in cigarettes causes a narrowing of the blood cells within the outer most layer of the epidermis. If blood flow decreases, the skin becomes deprived of oxygen and vital nutrients, such as vitamin A. As a result, the skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
