Asthma may be a minor or major health nuisance. The intensity of this allergic condition is different from patient to patient. As it is not curable, allergy asthma medicine is used by asthma patients to control the effects of the disease.
Effective Allergy Asthma Medicine
Some of the available treatment of asthma includes the use of the following medicines.
Rescue Inhalers (Short-Acting Bronchodilators)
Short-acting bronchodilators are the most common medicines used to curb asthma. These are administered to fight sudden symptoms in asthmatic persons. They have earned the name rescue inhalers due to their capability to deal with asthmatic symptoms within a short time and their relief lasting for up to six hours. Rescue inhalers are portable so as to allow people suffering from asthma to keep them close by in case of an attack.Â
Rescue inhalers work by relaxing the bronchial muscle in the lungs that swell during an attack. When these muscles relax, they open airways and allow more air in.
Inhaled Corticosteroids
When asthma advances and requires frequent use of rescue inhalers, a physician will recommend inhaled corticosteroids. As the name suggests, they are administered using inhalers—although an intravenous method is available. This medicine prevents asthma flare-ups and opens up lungs’ airways, thus decreasing inflammation. This is, therefore, a long-term medication for asthma; it is effective for management and control of allergy asthma.
Long-Acting Bronchodilators
Contrary to short-acting bronchodilators, these do not provide quick relief of asthma. They are, however, used to control allergic asthma. They are used regularly, just like rescue inhalers, say twice or thrice a day.
Long-acting bronchodilators should be prescribed by a doctor. They are powerful inhalants and should only be used alongside inhaled steroids. Long-acting bronchodilators should never be used alone in asthma control.
Anti-Leukotriene Drugs
Allergy asthma medicine does not only exist as inhalants. Anti-leukotriene drugs are pills. These are used in long-term asthma management and control.
These powerful medicines calm down airway inflammation and work by inhibiting leukotrienes. Anti-leukotriene medicines are, therefore, classified as a group of drugs controlling and managing the course of asthma. These drugs are used in advanced stages of asthma where symptoms’ severity can be easily observed.
Oral Corticosteroids
These are also pills and are administered orally. They are allergy asthma medicine that manage asthmatic conditions when the patient finds the rescue inhaler inadequate. Lung inflammation can lead to more critical symptoms; oral corticosteroids are used to manage lung inflammation to avoid this scenario.
These should, however, only be used when need be as high doses over a long period of time may cause side effects.
